Stopover
A stopover is a deliberate extended layover that lets you stay in a connecting city for an extended period, often days, on the way to your final destination. Where a program permits it, you essentially visit two places on one award booking. It turns a connection you would otherwise rush through into a bonus trip.
What it means in practice
Rules vary by program. Some allow a free stopover on a one-way or round-trip award, some charge a modest fee, and others do not permit them at all. When the rules line up, a single award can deliver a multi-city trip for close to the price of a simple round trip, which makes stopovers a favorite tool for stretching points.
Example
On a points itinerary from Chicago to Tokyo, a program might let you stop in Seoul for five days before continuing on. You see two cities, and the second stop costs you no extra points beyond the base award.
