Partner Award
A partner award is a flight or stay you book using one program's points but operated by a different airline or hotel in its alliance or partnership. You spend your miles, a partner provides the seat. These often unlock routes and cabins your own program cannot serve directly.
What it means in practice
Loyalty programs link up with partners so members can redeem points far beyond the home brand's own network. You keep earning and holding one currency, then spend it on a partner's metal when that fits your trip better.
The catch is that partner pricing and availability follow their own rules. A partner award can cost a different number of points than the same route on the home airline, and the seats released to partners are often limited, so flexibility helps a lot.
Example
You hold miles in one airline's program but book a long-haul flight operated by its alliance partner, paying 60,000 of your miles for a seat your own airline does not fly.
