Elite Status
Elite status is a recognition tier an airline or hotel grants to its most active members, unlocking perks like upgrades, free bags, lounge access, or late checkout. You earn it by flying, staying, or spending enough within a qualifying period. Higher tiers come with better benefits.
What it means in practice
Programs use tiers to reward loyalty and encourage you to keep your travel inside one brand. Status is usually earned over a calendar year and then held for the following year, so there is a recurring push to requalify before the clock resets.
The value of status depends on how you travel. A frequent flyer may save real money on bags and upgrades, while an occasional traveler might get more from simply redeeming points well. Status itself cannot be sold, only the points you earn along the way.
Example
Flying 25,000 qualifying miles in a year earns a mid-tier status that includes free checked bags and priority boarding for the next year.
