Mileage Run

A mileage run is a trip taken mainly to earn miles or qualifying activity rather than to actually go somewhere. The traveler cares about the points and status credits, not the destination. The flight pays for itself only if the rewards earned are worth more than the ticket and the time.

What it means in practice

Mileage runs were most common back when airlines awarded miles based on distance flown. A long, cheap routing could rack up a lot of miles per dollar, and some people chased them to top off a balance or push toward elite status before a deadline.

These have faded as most large programs shifted to revenue-based earning, where you earn on what you spend, not how far you fly. They still pop up around qualifying-activity bonuses or a year-end status push, but they are a niche tactic now.

Example

To lock in elite status before year-end, a flyer books a $300 round trip that posts 5,000 qualifying miles, just enough to cross the next tier.
