Valuation
A valuation is an estimate of what a point or mile is worth, usually expressed in cents per point. It is a benchmark, not a fixed price, since the real value of a redemption changes with how you use the points. Valuations help you compare programs and judge whether a given deal is good or weak.
What it means in practice
Published valuations are averages. They roll together a range of possible redemptions into one headline number so you have a quick reference. What you actually get can land above or below that figure, depending on the route, the dates, and whether you found a strong redemption or a poor one.
Example
If a program's miles are valued at roughly 1.3 cents each, then 50,000 miles carry an estimated worth near 650 dollars. A great redemption might push the effective value higher, while booking against expensive cash fares could drag it lower.
