Sweet Spot

A sweet spot is a specific redemption that returns far more value than the program's average, usually because of a pricing quirk the program has not closed. These are the deals that make points worth chasing. Experienced travelers build whole trips around them.

What it means in practice

Sweet spots usually live in the gap between a partner's award chart and what a flight actually costs in cash. A short hop priced the same as a long one, a premium cabin that prices like coach through a particular partner, a region that one program covers cheaply. They reward people who learn the charts.

Because they are quirks, sweet spots are also fragile. A devaluation can erase one without notice, which is why the people who use them tend to book quickly when they find availability.

Example

A program might price a business class seat at 60,000 miles on a route that would cost 4,000 dollars in cash, giving you well over six cents per point.
