Free Night Certificate
A free night certificate is a voucher, usually from a hotel co-branded card or a status perk, good for one award night up to a set points value. You redeem it instead of paying points for that night. Many come with an annual card renewal.
What it means in practice
Certificates are typically capped at a number of points, so a certificate worth up to 35,000 points covers any night that prices at or below that level. Some programs let you top off with extra points if the night prices slightly higher than the cap.
They expire, often a year after issue, which makes them a use-it-or-lose-it benefit. The trick is matching the certificate to a night that prices near its cap, so you squeeze out close to the full value rather than burning it on a cheap room.
Example
Your card's annual certificate is capped at 35,000 points. You use it on a night that prices at 34,000 points, capturing nearly all of its value.
