Form 1099-K

Form 1099-K is a US tax form that payment platforms and marketplaces send to report payments made to you for goods and services. If you sell points or miles for cash through a platform, you may receive one when your activity crosses the reporting threshold. It reports gross payments, not your profit.

What it means in practice

The form goes to both you and the IRS, summarizing the gross amount a platform paid you during the year. For 2026, the federal reporting threshold is more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions, a level restored by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act after several years of lower proposed thresholds. Some states set their own lower thresholds, so you may get a form even if you stay under the federal line.

Getting a 1099-K does not by itself decide what you owe. It reports gross payments, and your actual taxable amount depends on your own situation. Anyone selling points for meaningful sums should keep records and talk to a tax professional rather than guess.

Example

If a platform pays you a total above $20,000 across more than 200 separate sales in a year, it issues a 1099-K reporting that gross total to you and the IRS.
